Ben Maffin from maffin.co.uk reviews his top 10 tips for writing a Best Man’s Speech.

There’s a lot more detail you need to consider (which have been covered in other articles), but these top 10 tips for writing a Best Man’s Speech will stand you in good stead and make an easy list to print out when you’re sitting trying to write the speech.

Top Ten Best Man Speech Tips

1. Start writing your best man’s speech at least two months before the big day. Leaving it until the last minute will wreck your nerves.

2. Practice. Practice. Practice. No really. This is important it’ll help with your delivery on the day.

3. Always responds on behalf of the bridesmaids and mention how lovely they look. It’s what their mums and dads will be expecting. They might even buy you a drink later if you suitably creep.

4. Avoid alcohol before giving the speech. Dutch courage is a double edged sword.

5. Do not give anything away to the bride, groom or anyone else (unless you have a confidant you are practicing infront) before making the speech. It will spoil the surprise and they may steal your ideas.

6. Do not offend the Bride in any way. It’s her day and she’ll not forgive you if you make her cry.

7. Try linking in jokes stories with your speech but make them as seemless as possible. The more people believe the story is true, the bigger the laughs you will get when you deliever the punch line.

8. Remember that making a mistake is no big deal. Avoid going back to correct it, this is what people usually notice.

9. Avoid using cliché quotes from books. This is what the groom will have done (which is why their speeches are usually unremarkable). Instead use actual situations and make a story out of it. If in doubt, make one up no-one will challenge you while you’re up there.

10. Always end on a positive note and with a toast to the bride and groom.

Conclusion

While the above is not a definitive guide, ticking them off should get you a least a pass mark after the event. The more you think about what you are doing the better the speech will be. There’s nothing wrong with re-drafting your speech on the morning before because you’ve had a good idea.

wedding speeches grooms father

Everybody expects father of the bride speeches to be touching, witty, and heart-warming. There is not a more emotional part considering all the wedding speeches. It shows a father giving up his daughter to the man that will love her the rest of her life. Father of the bride speeches should be centered on creating an atmosphere of hospitality.

The father of the bride should give a speech with a duration of 6 to 10 minutes, not more. After the father of the bride speech there will be a lot of other speeches, so it is recommended to be between 6 and 10 minutes. It is very important to plan carefully the father of the bride speech, as well as the other speeches. After the father of the bride speech, goes the groom speech, the best man wedding speech and closes, the maid of honor speech.

Father of the bride speeches can also include father’s dreams for his daughter and how she’d managed to fulfill those dreams. Distinct characteristics of his daughter can be considered, which made her the person she is now. The goal of the father of the bride speech is to express in words his love for his daughter.

Father of the bride speeches should, in addition, welcome the groom to his family.

Toasting the bride and groom is considered a great end of the speech. Giving a father of the bride speech should be considered a great honor, expecting his daughter will never forget his words.

groom speeches at weddings

In part 1 of this article we looked at what you should actually be talking about in your grooms speech. Now in part 2 we are going to look at how to control your nerves before standing up and delivering the speech of your life.

A word about nerves :

Nerves should never be mistaken for fear. Nerves are a good thing and should be welcomed. Nerves are a sign that you want to do well, you need to learn how to control your nerves so you can deliver your best. Ask any major sports star if they get nerves before the big game – the answer is always yes. They know that feeling will help them achieve the very best results. You need to accept that and welcome nerves as they appear.

The wedding breakfast comes to an end and the time for the speeches approaches

Its time for you to relax and try and shift some of that anxiety that has been building for most of the day.

Take a seat and close your eyes. Ensure that you are sitting comfortably. Slow your breathing down.

Inhale through your nose till your lungs become full then slowly exhale breathing out all the air in your lungs through your mouth.

Inhale again, filling your lungs, do it slowly – take three to five seconds to fill up.

Then pause. For a count of two.

Then exhale. Slowly again to a count of three to five if possible.

Then pause. Then Inhale again.

Try this for around about ten minutes. You will slowly start to fell the stress and worry leaving your mind.

This can be done without drawing attention to yourself. The best time to do this is during the Father of the Bride Speech – everyone is watching him and not you.

As the final seconds come before you talk take a final couple of deep breaths and then stand up, smile and deliver your speech.

wedding toasts who toasts who

wedding toasts who toasts who
who toasts who during the wedding?

My wedding is coming up in two weeks and I need to know who toasts who. Who toasts the bride, the bridesmaids, etc etc.
any advice would really help me!

The maid of honor and best man give toasts to the couple. You and your fiance can give a little speech (toast) to welcome everyone and thank them for being there. Sometimes parents will give little toasts. That’s really it. Anything else is extra. (FYI: Technically, when someone is toasting you, you do not raise your glass or drink after because you are not supposed to drink to yourself.)

Maid of honor/ best man speech samples?

Ok so i am the maid of honor in my friends wedding and my fiance is the Best man. So what i would like to know is for the toast that we both have to give is it ok if we do one together? I as well as him aren’t to good at doing speeches and does anyone have any websites that i can find samples of combined toasts/ speeches?

Thanks so much

I tried googling for you but came up with nothing, i think it is because it’s not too common for people to do combined speeches, what you could try doing is googling examples of MOH and BM speeches and putting something together, when you both get up to speak, you should let the guests know you’re both going to do the toast together, maybe add a little humor as to why (since you’re engaged, you’re getting ready to share everything together.. or something along those lines..) Hope this was of some sort of help. Good luck!!

In the grooms wedding speech does he just compliment the Bride or does he raise a toast to her ?

There aren’t any hard and fast rules. In your groom speech a groom can raise a toast to his bride, and why not? Though, not every groom will do that and that’s a very good reason why a groom should consider toasting his bride. In fact, it’s an excellent idea.

wedding speeches and etiquette

Wedding etiquette?

Is it wrong to not have the “traditional” wedding? I want to keep most parts of the wedding traditional, but some I don’t want at all.
I don’t want the Maid of Honor or Best man to say a speech during the reception.
I don’t want to do the whole pulling the garter off my thigh.
Is it wrong to not do these things?
I’m very shy, and I think it will be hard enough on my to get the courage to walk down the isle in front of people. I want the whole wedding to be just relaxed, and take away any extra attention!
What do you think?

Thanks in advance for your answers!

Hi Brittany and congratulations on your upcoming wedding!

NO…it is not wrong at all! I totally agree with everyone else that has told you this. I was very much like you when I was married (still am)….I DON’T like attention on me. To be honest…..I hate the garter thing. Sometimes they get downright nasty and obscene.

Again, like everyone has said….YOU do what YOU want! If you don’t, you will regret it. Don’t let ANYONE tell you otherwise. You may get some that say….”but it’s tradition!”
That’s crap.

Good luck and I hope you have a beautiful wedding day and a nice relaxed reception!
